Congress Knuckles Under with Tons of Pork

So the Senate passes a bail out bill with tons of pork attached and sends it over to the House of Representatives. After several days of politicking and behind the scenes deals, the House met on Friday and passes the bail out bill. It was hand carried over to Presidnet Bush who signed it immediately.

The big whigs on Wall Street must be partying their asses off this weekend. I know that the executives at AIG all went to a 5 star resort to celebrate their Government bail out gift. This whole thing makes me so disgusted I can’t even speak.

Thanks for the Tunes Richard Wright

Bothers me to read about some of the world best rock stars, musicians and comedians dying this year. We’ve lost a lot of great talent this summer and the list grows longer with the passing of Richard Wright, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd. Cancer took this world class keyboard player and songwriter from us at just 65 years old.

Pink Floyd had a rocky history of band members fighting and firing and suing each other. But the fact remains that the music was so original, so awesome and so timeless that we will always love the band and their songs.

Rock on, Richard Wright - thanks for the tunes.

No Gas

Maybe I’ve been living under a rock these past couple of days - what with school and working at the hospital. But I had no idea that we were having a gas shortage around here. I went to get gas after class and pick up a 24 pack of Pepsi. But when I pulled up to the pump there were plastic grocery bags over all the handles. So I went into the store and asked what’s up, and the clerk tells me that because of Hurricane Ike that all the gas stations are out of gas. All the BPS are out of gas, some of the Shells are out and a couple of the Exxons have mid grade and premium gas - but they are sold out of regular.

I hadn’t even noticed but station that have taken out the numbers from their signs that post the price per gallon are signaling that they are out of gas. If there’s no numbers on the sign - drive on by.

Well, it’s going to be pretty tough to get to the hospital from here if I can’t find some gas.

Four ‘canes in a Row

The past 10 days or so we have had four major hurricanes headed for the U.S.

First there was Gustav, that bore down on New Orleans and caused massive evacuations as a safeguard against the type of flooding, property damage and loss of life that was caused three years ago by Hurricane Katrina. Thankfully, Gustav hit land to the West of New Orleans and was downgraded quickly from an almost Category 4 hurricane to just a tropical storm. So New Orleans dodged the bullet this time.

The next big hurricane was right on the heels of Katrina, Hannah. Instead of the Gulf Coast, Hannah take a swipe on the East Coast, with most of the wind and rain affecting South Carolina and North Carolina, then faded out as it tore through Virginia.

Now we are all watching the development and projected path of Hurricane Ike. At the moment, most of the damage has been in the Caribbean, but the Florida Keys are on high alert and tourists in Key West have been asked to leave. We will wee which way the hurricane blows after it hits the Keys and I hope that Ike losing its power just as quickly as Gustav and Hannah did. After all, we still need to brace ourselves for Hurricane Josephine.

Stormy Weather

Everyone in Florida has been on edge for several days awaiting the landfall of Tropical Storm/Hurricane Fay. The state got lucky last year with minimal hurricane damage and so far this year it has been light again. But Fay has been bearing down on both Florida coasts was a vengeance, and it did come across the bottom third of the state yesterday, bringing a lot of rain and wind. Experts predict that once Fay hits the Atlantic again she will regain her strength and swing back across the top third of the state in a boomerang effect.

According to the local weather forecast, the fringe effects of Fay will come all the way up here if she truly does boomerang back across Florida and bring us a few days of wind and rain. Probably cost us a weekend of really bad weather. Guess we can hunker down and crack the books, and maybe get online for some interactive gaming if we have to stay indoors all weekend.

Imus Foot in Mouth Again

First of all, I don’t listen to the Don Imus show. I think he’s a jackass and I don’t waste my time listening to the kind of stuff he talks about.

But I was amused when he caught the media spotlight off his “nappy haired ho’s” remark. He needed to be reeled in, and to be honest, I was surprised that he got back on the air so quickly.

But now he’s put his foot in his mouth again. I wonder how much the station management will put up with before they require him to see a shrink or just retire?

He was discussing the Pacman Jones debacle with his producer, who is black, and he mentioned all the arrests and trouble that Pacman brought upon himself while he was supposed to be playing for the Titans. Imus says, “What color is he?” (which was his first mistake) and his producer answered, “He’s African-American.” Then Imus was stupid enough to say, “Well, there you go.”

The station management needs to show Imus the back door that dumps out into the alley with the rest of the trash and say to him as they boot his ass out, “Well, there you go!”

And the Titans should have done the same thing to PacMan last year instead of rolling over like a  ____________ (fill in the blank).

Missouri Flooding

The news has bee full of stories about flooding this past week all along the Mississippi River. The flooding took out millions of acres of farmland and crops. Iowas and Missouri have been the worst hit.

My buddy in St. Louis called this morning to ask if I’m interested in coming up there to work with him the rest of this summer. He has a great job installing carpet and flooring, and with all the damage to homes in businesses from the flooding, there will be a lot of work to do. He’s been in touch with a disaster cleanup company called “Water Restoration 911″ and they are going to be really busy over the next 2-3 months in Missouri.

Water Restoration 911 can respond to emergencies nationwide, 24/7. Their website has a toll free hotline people can call for help, and their team of technicians can be on the scene, often within 30 minutes of the call. There’s going to be a lot of carpet and flooring that needs to be replaced, so there’s lots of work, with almost unlimited overtime, for contractors in the flooded areas. Not sure I want to leave here to go do that, but the money might change my mind.

Kitty Kitty

My mom went to get in her car this morning and unlike me who had a flat, she found a little kitten up under the wheel well of the tire. It’s a little grey and black striped kitten, looks like maybe 6 weeks or 8 weeks old. I peeked - it’s a little girl.

The kitten stayed up under the car, mewing pitifully. She didn’t want to drive the car in case the kitten got trapped up under the car or run over. So she took my dad’s car instead. When she got back from the store, the kitten was still there.

When I got back from the tire store the kitten was still there. We are puzzled at where it could have come from. None of our neighbors have cats - almost everyone on my street has one or more dogs, like us. I guess I’ll have to make a poster and tack it up on some of the poles in the neighborhood. Surely someone will claim this cute little thing.

The Lakers and The Spurs

The Lakers looked great in the first two games of their series vs. the Spurs. These first two games where in Los Angeles  at the Lakers home court. The next game was in San Antonio, where the Spurs would take the home court to their advantage. In game three the Spurs looked like a different team, mostly because of  Ginobali. He had thirty points in game three, more than in both games one and two combined. With the series at 2-1 in favor of the Lakers, the Spurs needed a win in game four win to tie things back up and sent the series back to Lakers town. However, things did not go as planned for them. Game four was a close game all the way through. With just a few seconds left on the clock, the Lakers were up 93-91. On the last attempt of the game, Brandon Barry tried a shot and missed which ended the game, giving the Lakers a 3-1 series lead and the next game at their home court.
